Soweto is a Johannesburg township with a rich and inspiring history. It was the home of several iconic South African freedom fighters, namely Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Hector Pieterson. Today, it is a vibrant urban settlement filled with welcoming, friendly people who are happy to open their hearts and homes to locals and international tourists alike.

Our first stop is Soccer City, or the FNB Stadium (also known as “The Calabash”). To prepare for the FIFA World Cup of 2010, it was improved upon to host an impressive 94 700 seats, making it the largest of its kind on the continent. We then visit Chris Hani Baragwanath, or “Bara” Hospital, the third largest hospital in the world.

Next, we head to the Hector Pieterson Museum – a historically significant memorial honouring the life of the first child to be killed during the Soweto uprising in 1976. For South Africans, Hector has become a national symbol of the struggle against apartheid.

8115 Vilakazi Street is the last stop on the tour. First built in 1945, it was the home of former South African president and world-changing visionary and activist, Nelson Mandela.
